31 Days to Save Energy, Money and Maine's Environment
Complete one task each day and reward yourself by putting a quarter in a jar. After 31 days of saving energy, money & the environment, you will also save $7.75. With $7 you could purchase a compact fluorescent light bulb from the Maine Council of Churches. Install your new light bulb and you will save more energy & money! o   Carpool to a local meeting, worship or event. (Save 20 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for each gallon of gasoline saved, plus money for gas.)

o  Ask your superintendent to encourage district school bus drivers’ participation in Maine’s anti-idling campaign — Doing My Share for Clean Air. (Diesel bus exhaust is toxic to humans and the environment.)

o  Check your tire pressure and keep properly inflated. (Save 250 pounds of CO2 emissions annually. Get better gas mileage as well.)

o   Investigate carpooling to work. (If you don’t know someone in your neighborhood to carpool, call RIDESHARE at 1-800-280-7433)

o  Call or visit your state legislators about Maine increasing the fuel efficiency of its car fleet. (Maine has a few hybrids but state agencies need more.)

o  Use public transportation. (Ride the train or bus to Boston, take a bus in a Maine city or area where it’s available.)

o  Spend an evening at home with your family without electronic entertainment/radio/television. (Board games and reading are energy-saving, fun activities that bring folks closer together- no transportation cost)

o  Piggy-back several errands together. (Remember you save energy, money and pollution with every gallon of gasoline saved.)

o  Don’t idle your car for more than 10 seconds. (It saves gas/money and cuts back on air pollution.)

o  Tune up your car. (Annual tune-up saves 900 pounds of CO2 emissions.)

o  Shop at farmers markets, join a community-supported agriculture farm, buy local foods year round.

o   Recycle a newspaper. (Save 50 pounds of CO2 emissions with daily recycling.)

o  Send a letter to Maine’s Congressional delegation asking them to continue their leadership on progressive energy policy legislation.

o  Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

o  Buy copy paper produced from post-consumer waste without chlorine compounds.
